November 15: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

This month we will be screening Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ) by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, the film centers on the last days of the life of the titular Uncle Boonmee. With his loved ones - including the ghost of his dead wife and his lost son who has returned in non-human form - Boonmee explores his past lives as he contemplates the reasons for his illness. A.O. Scott of the New York Times stated in his review:
Those who insist on a linear narrative or an easily identifiable set of themes may find themselves puzzled, perhaps to the point of frustration. But it hard to see how this movie, with its contemplative mood and genial, curious spirit, could make anybody angry. On the contrary: encountered in an appropriately exploratory frame of mind, it can produce something close to bliss.
The film will be introduced by Dena Beard, Curatorial Assistant at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. She managed the MATRIX projects of Desirée Holman and Silke Otto-Knapp and has worked on exhibitions with Tomas Saraceno, Trevor Paglen, Martha Colburn, Tris Vonna-Michelll, Ahmet Ogut, Omer Fast, and Emily Roysdon, and others. Independently, she curates projects such as the Lending Library exhibition series and Taking Up Room on the Floor for Bay Area galleries and alternative spaces. Prior to joining BAM/PFA, she was curatorial associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum.
